Today much of downtown Artesia consists of warehouses used for storage or exported petroleum products (fracking wastewater also sometimes ends up here). The first Europeans to visit Artesia, New Mexico were the Spaniards in 1519. They named the town after the Armenian general and explorer Captain Hernando de Soto. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1610, but they only explored the area for a short time before leaving. In 1847, Mexican nationals established a rancho (farm) near what is now downtown Artesia. The following year, Santa Fe merchants founded the First National Bank of Santa Fe as a means of financing irrigation projects in southern New Mexico. In 1861, Juan Bautista Alvarado founded an agricultural cooperative known as La Union del Norte which produced cotton and other crops. In 1875, John Wesley Powell explorationisted through eastern New Mexico and reached Casa Grande while on his way to survey the Pliocene-age Colorado River Plain south of Las Vegas Valley. He named that part of Arizona Mountains "Artesia". When he returned to American soil in 1879 his findings were published as "A Geographical Register of Arizona" vol XXXVII pp 433-439; however he did not actually visit Artesia until 1893 when he was on his way back from exploringWindow Rock Area eastward along I-8
