Artesia is part of the Raton Valley Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Artesia goes back to 1821 when Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Bernalillo County from Pueblo de Taos. They founded the town of San José de la Laguna on the east bank of the Rio Grande near present-day Albuquerque. The first post office was established in 1825 and soon became known as "Artesia". In 1851, following Mexican independence from Spain, Santa Fe businessmen James Waddell and Lorenzo Guerra donated land to the new county for a courthouse and jail. In 1865, after more than fifty years as a township under Bernalillo County jurisdiction, Artesia became its own county seat under New Mexico Statehood laws passed by Governor John Beatty on November 11th that year. The economy of Artesia has been based largely on agriculture with cattle ranching being an important part of local culture until recently; however, some businesses have diversified into services such as plumbing and home health care since deregulation hit the state during the 1990s. The growing Hispanic population has led to increased restaurant options and cultural amenities such as salsa dancing and flamenco music performance venues opened up throughout downtown during this time period.
