Artesia is a small town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The first Europeans to visit Artesia were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1698 and named it San Francisco de Asís after their ship, "San Francisco" sighted land on July 20, 1698. This probably refers to the Mission San Francisco de Asís located in what is now downtown Artesia. In 1810, ranchers from Chihuahua founded a small town about northeast of Artesia called Acoma where they built stores and began trading goods with the Pueblo Indians. In 1820 Assisintantonio Peña and his brother Miguel bought 6 miles (9 km) of Mexicanland east of Acoma from Manuel Micheltorena for $1,000 cash. They also acquired some adobe buildings there that still stand today including the old courthouse and jail. In 1824 Manuel Micheltorena sold 2,500 acres (8 km2) east of Acoma to José María Morelos for $5,000 cash plus 10 slaves who would work on his ranchos there until 1830 when he finally allowed free access to these slaves within reason so that they could improve their lives by learning English and working towards independence from Mexico as stipulated in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War. In 1830 Morelos sold this land back to Micheltorena for $4,000 more than he had paid for it two years earlier! All told, over 350 people lived in or near Artesia by 1800; most were farmers or cowboysraising livestock on large ranches scattered throughout northeastern New Mexico Territory formed into three district governments: Rancho del Rio Arriba (the westernmost), Rancho Santa Fe de Nuevo México (the easternmost), and Rancho Los Alamos (northwest corner of Albuquerque). Many residents here intermarried with Anglo settlers or Mexicans living nearby; several families even became Ute Indian Chiefs during times of peace or war with Mexican forces across the US-Mexico borderlands. In 1846 local resident Antonio Moreno petitioned Congress for an Act granting citizenship to all New Mexicans regardless of race as proposed by Ulysses S Grant; but no action was taken until 1850 when a bill authorizing citizenship was passed by both Houses but vetoed by President James K Polk because it included requirements forbidding anyone born outside Spain from becoming citizens without undergoing naturalization ceremonies which many Spaniards refused to go through despite egg color being nothing more than an identifier at that time! On November 11th 1860 a group made up mostly Hispanicesteaders led by Lorenzo Coleman broke into Santa Fe County Courthouse while deputies were present forcelessly arresting all 60+ peaceful demonstrators inside without warning any individuals or material damage did occurred - one deputy sustained minor injuries!!! The following day Coleman met with Polk at White Sands Army Base southwest of Albuquerque where Coleman presented him with List Of Evidence documenting participants participation & complicity within forcibly suppressing protest...This event effectively ended Manifest Destiny aspirations among Hispanics & led directly to Civil War [emphasis added].
