Red Dot Sight History in Artesia, New Mexico Artesia was founded in 1859 by José Francisco Ortiz and his wife, María Victoria de la Cruz. The city was named for the red dot sight that Ortiz developed to help him with his military service. In 1916, Artesia became a town and in 1938 it became a municipality. The first Red Dot Sight opened in Artesia on October 15th of 1916 by Mr. John Jardine and Mrs. Dora Minton Fowler at the then known as Pecos County Arsenal located on Waco Road south of US-61 east of Pecos City (present day Rio Rancho). At that time, there were no streets or buildings within the limits of present day Artesia and all residents were housed at the Arsenal. In 1932, Red Dot Sight merged with the modern rifle company ARP Arms to form ARP Firearms Corporation which still operates today as one of the largest rifle companies in America with over 150 years history! The earliest rifles manufactured by ARP Firearms Corporation included models 1 through 9mm UMATIX calibers using 6 round magazines made from steel with black anodized finish. These early rifles were used for target shooting exhibitions throughout New Mexico until 1942 when they were replaced byModel 10s chambered for .30-06 Springfield rounds which allowed for longer range hunting experiences! Model 10s continued to be produced until 1958 when they were replaced by new Model 12 rifles which entered production utilizing a new gas system designed specifically for this caliber! All later models except model 14 have been variations upon original Model 12 designs incorporating various enhancements such as adjuvant feeding systems (ejectors), night sights and windage adjustment knobs providing unsurpassed accuracy over any other type of red dot sight available contemporaneously! Models 16 through 24 are also variations upon original design but incorporate fiber optic reticles instead of traditional red dots making them extremely versatile additions to any firearms collection! Today’s artesian population is composed mainly of retirees who enjoy longrange target shooting experiences while young families operate small businesses within close proximity to their homes enjoying easy access to world class targets located just outside their doorsteps – something that has not changed much since 1932 when Rifleman Magazine featured an article entitled “Shooting out into Arizona: A Guide To Red Dot Sights”

The town has also developed an arts program with its own art gallery, art museum, and creative writing workshop called "Artesias".
