Artesia, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Puebla. The population was 527 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The first Europeans to visit Artesia were Franciscan missionaries in 1540. They founded a mission here and named it San Francisco de Asís after their patron saint, Francis Xavier. After that, the area around Artesia became rancho land owned by Spanish families until 1821 when United States troops destroyed the Adobe Walls stockade surrounding the town to make way for Rancho Santa Fe de Nuevo Padre, which became part of Alta California during Mexican America's War (1846-48). In 1847, General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked Artesia during his march from Chihuahua across southern New Mexico into Arizona Territory to seize control over that region for Mexico. On February 28th of that year, Santa Anna arrived at Artesia with 1,500 men and burned down the adobe walls around the town while its inhabitants were inside their houses. Three days later he reached Tucson without incident but left behind a bandit chief who had managed to escape with important supplies: 800 rifles, 10 cannons and 4 thousand rounds of ammunition. After this raid on Artesia there was heavy internal fighting between supporters of General Santa Anna and those loyal to Presidentón Liberal Dominguez whoStyled himself "presidente liberal" (or "liberal general"). Ultimately Dominguez was forced out of office by popular insurrection led by Captain José María Morelos García del Castillo y Torres alias Texano who took up arms against Dominguez's forces under command of Colonel José Joaquín Rodríguez Caballero y Anaya on November 3rd 1847 at Las Cruces near Taos Creek where they defeated him soundly before withdrawing back towards Albuquerque under cover of darkness.. On December 8th 1847 Texano receiving news from Chihuahua received orders from his superior Major Francisco Urquiza Garcia commanding him column deep within Arizona Territory carry out an assault upon Edicto San Miguel whose force had been reinforced by 2200 soldiers under Don Carlos Garza Ugalde commanderate Ciudad Juárez Department swollen by recent influxes Of Mexicans fleeing Mexican violence in El Paso Texas City . With barely 24 hours notice Texano set out from Albuquerque headlong into what would become one day's ride known as los Rios Grande Desert or Mogollon Rim because so much water poured downriver every day during this time period calledchoes backwater canyon now know as Rio Bravo Doce after today's river Armida east sidePrimary Colorado River Crossing less than two miles from present day town limits today high desert
