Artesia is a town in Webb County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Artesia" comes from the Apache word "kachina," meaning "to peer." In 1847 Antonio Armijo and his family settled in what is now Artesia after traveling to Gallup and Santa Fe on their way to cattle ranching in Arizona. They named their community for José de la Cruz Arteaga, Spanish explorer who had discovered New Mexico in 1519. In 1868 an act of Congress created Webb County and Artesia became its first county seat. The artesian well known world wide for its production of turquoise was founded here by John Waddell during the 1870s. The old courthouse fell into disrepair and was razed in 1904; however, a new courthouse was completed in 1912 and remains today as one of Artesia's most iconic symbols. Today, Artesia is a thriving commercial center with several major retailers including Macy's, Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Kmart Corporation,hemispheric Bazaar and local restaurants like Joe's Pizza and El Pollo Loco Jr.. It also contains two large shopping malls - the Atchison mall (opened in 1984)and I-10 West Mall (opened in 1990).

The city of Artesia, New Mexico is located in the middle of the state of New Mexico. The population of Artesia was 1,821 as of the 2010 census. The city is home to an art museum and several museums including the Museum of American Indian Arts which is dedicated to the history and culture of Native Americans in New Mexico. Artesia began as a small settlement on the banks of a stream that ran through what is now downtown Artesia. In 1853, General James Shields founded Fort Bliss in what is now Albuquerque, New Mexico and named his new post for his old friend and mentor, General Stephen Kearny. Fort Bliss served as a military base for years until it was decommissioned in 1907. During its time at Fort Bliss, Fort Bliss oversaw construction on what would become downtown Artesia. In 1865-1868, during Mexican America War II, General Pio Pico fought against Ulysses S Grant's forces at Battle of San Antonio de los Bueyes near Albuquerque. According to some sources Pico's victory at San Antonio de los Bueyes marked the end of Mexican America War II; however this particular account does not agree with other sources which claim that Pico's victory at San Antonio de los Bueyes led to increased United States support for then-President Andrew Johnson's effort to retake Mexico City from Francisco Lopez Jiménez y Gómez. During its time at Fort Bliss, Fort Bliss oversaw construction on what would become downtown Artesia; indeed during its tenure much progress was made in developing downtown Artesia into one of NewMexico’s most popular tourist destinations beginning in earnest following its opening in 1865 by local businessmen John Davenport and A W Chapman who had purchased land adjacent to present day First National Bank building across from Main Street On July 9th 1870 Anthony Hildebrandt became first white person born within commuting distance (of El Paso) when he came down from Santa Fe via stagecoach on July 8th 1870 while living with his parents Amos Hildebrandt and Sarah Decker He also attended School Number One later called “Hildebrandt” where he learned basic arithmetic skills
In 1847, Artesia was founded as a small community by Spanish settlers. The town quickly became known for its fruit and vegetables production, and also for its strong religious beliefs. In 1870, the area was designated as part of the newly created County of Santa Fe, which helped to spur development in Artesia. By the turn of the century, Artesia had become one of New Mexico's leading towns. Its prosperity allowed residents to build impressive homes and churches along Main Street. The town also attained notoriety for its annual flourexport fair, which attracted attention from all over the United States.
