Artesia is a small town located in the Mexican state of New Mexico. The population of Artesia was 5,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Roswell Metropolitan Statistical Area. The art and culture that exists in Artesia can be traced back to 1851 when José María Martinez and his family immigrated from Spain to what is now New Mexico. Martinez began practicing drawing and painting at an early age, and he exhibited his work throughout the country. In 1865, Martinez moved to Albuquerque, where he continued painting and drew inspiration from Spanish classical art. He also founded the first school of art in New Mexico. Martinez' legacy still persists today as one of the most important forces behind contemporary NM artistry. The history of Artesia goes back even further however; it was originally called Pueblo de las Cuevas (Cave Town). In 1871, a group of Franciscan missionaries came across the area and named it Artesianápolis after Mount Carmel which they were visiting on their way to evangelize new territory in Arizona. The name stuck until 1880, when it was shortened again to just Artésia before being given its current form within 100 years ago! As time went on various businesses opened up around town such as grocery stores, apothecaries, post offices etcetera which all had a hand in shaping what life was like for residents hereabouts during those times – something that still happens today with so many different businesses clustering around downtown Place A & B! Many people who have lived here over time say that there’s nothing quite like feeling like you are right at home – no matter where you are in town! One thing that definitely sets Artésia apart from other small towns or villages I’ve been to is how much emphasis is placed on arts & culture! There are plenty of galleries & museums everywhere else but this isn’t just about selling paintings or sculptures though – everything here has a purposeful design & importance attached too! Artesia was a small town in New Mexico until the early 1800s. The community was located on the eastern side of the Rio Grande, about twenty miles northwest of Albuquerque. By 1852, Artesia had grown to include a few hundred people and six schools. In 1887, Artesia became an incorporated town with a population of over one thousand people. The town's history begins with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1795. The first white settler in Artesia was José Antonio Delgado, who purchased land from the Chiricahua Apache tribe. For many years, Apaches raiding the area hunted down and killed any white men that found their way into the region. As part of this policy, Delgado left his own children behind to provide for their ranching and farming activities when he died in 1801. In 1827, General Manuel Armijo forced Mexican colonists to leave New Mexico after losing a war against indigenous groups at Santa Fe. Many of these colonists were unable or unwilling to return to their homes because they lacked food and shelter. Instead, they set up camp along the banks of the Rio Grande near present-day El Paso County in what is now southern New Mexico Territory. From here, they continued trading goods with Mexicans living in Zacatecas and Veracruz before finally starting construction on what would become Fort San Carlos de Asís (later San Miguel de Allende) in 1840-41 as part of an effort by Mexican officials to reestablish control over northern New Mexico Territory following United States victory in the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1850, after more than two centuries without civilized contact with other peoples outside of Native American nations, Americans began arriving in significant numbers throughout much of western America through travel routes such as California Trail and Donner Party Trails. One such individual was James Wickersham who journeyed westward from Boston aboard the USS Mayflower on September 20th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' landing on Hispaniola (not including his actual landfall). Upon disembarking at Santa Fe he hired guides Filipinos called “Chiricahuas” under Captain Manuel Micheltorena to lead him across mountain ranges into central New Mexico Territory where he hoped to find goldfields(see below). In 1862, Artesia was founded by José María Anaya and his wife Gaspara de la Garza. The town was named in honor of General Antonio Artemisa, who helped lead the Mexican-American War. The population of Artesia grew rapidly from its initial handful of residents to more than 100 by 1875. In 1881, the railroad arrived in the area and led to a proliferation of businesses and homes around the town square. By 1915, there were over 1,000 residents in Artesia. The community experienced a decline during World War II due to rationing measures implemented by the United States government. However, they recovered after the war and began to grow again into the late 1970s. During that time, many new families moved into Artesia from other parts of New Mexico because of its low cost of living and good schools available in the area. Today, Artesia is an established community with a diverse population that enjoys excellent local amenities such as public transportation and a wide variety of cultural events throughout the year.
