The Artesia Historical Society was founded in 1907 by Mrs. Mabel Hovey and Dr. Edward Sells as a society for the promotion of art and culture in the town of Artesia, New Mexico. The society is now an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Artesia and its surrounding areas.
Artesia is a small town in New Mexico that has been around since the 1800s. The name comes from the Apache Indians who used to live there. The first Europeans to come to Artesia were French traders, and they brought with them their artesian water wells which gave the settlement its name. In 1824, General Armistead Maupin arrived in Artesia and founded a military post called Fort Union onthe current site of the city. From here, he was able to observe and trade with Native Americans in what is now Arizona and New Mexico. In 1848, Territorial Governor Manuel Lisandro organized a group of settlers who came to Artesia from Durango and Santa Fe. They named the community after José María Arteaga, an Italian-born general who fought for Mexican independence during the Mexican-American War. After years of development, Artesia became a thriving town with both business and cultural interests. It boasted a population of about 100 people in 1860, but by 1870 it had decreased to about 15 due to declining rains and an increase in wagon traffic across the US border. However, things changed when American entrepreneur James Waddell arrived in Artesia in 1871and began developing land east of town into what is now Albuquerque County (New Mexico). With Waddell’s help, Artesia began experiencing new growth as businesses opened up along with increasing numbers of residents attracted by opportunities for jobs and education within easy reach. By 1880, there were more than 300 people living in Artesia proper; however, by 1890 it had grown only to 150 due again to population growth outside its boundaries as well as competition from nearby towns such as Gallup (Albuquerque) over access to goods available closer within New Mexico’s borders. But despite these challenges – including multiple fires that destroyed much of downtownduring an outbreak of yellow feverin 1888 – Artsiapanians persevered through tough times until 1911 when oil discoveries ledto increased traffic along NM highways which diverted attention away from local businesses spending their limited resources on infrastructure projects instead. The Pueblo of Durango was established in 1540 by the Taos Ixcalteca people, who had come from central Mexico City as traders and missionaries. At first they stayed only for a short time before moving westward into what is now northwestern New Mexico. In 1685, when Spanish settlers arrived in New Mexico, they found the Acoma living near the Salinas River and decided to move them too because they thought they would be easier to control than the other Native American groups around them. In 1867 José de la Torre founded Artesia with his brother Vicente as its first residents. The two brothers believed that art could bring peace and prosperity to their community—the arts would nurture creativity and stimulate economic development. They soon realized that this was not simply an advertising campaign; real art existed outside of museums or galleries where people could watch carefully crafted works displayed for hours on end without ever touching them or feeling any creative urge themselves! The Torres family ran Artesia until 1971 when it became part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area through annexation by neighboring city Albuquerque . Today, although it remains primarily an agricultural community with no commercial activity, Artesianans enjoy access to some excellent schools, shopping malls, parks (including one full of olive trees), waterfalls/streams (including one called "Garden Reach"),and fine restaurants throughout downtown Albuquerque .
