In 1881, a man named George Witte reported seeing "a quantity of pistols, shotguns and rifles" on the town square. A few years later, a man by the name of John Hildebrandt sold a rifle for $5 to an individual in Artesia. Artesia is a small town in New Mexico, located on the banks of the Rio Grande. The population was 6,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Taos County seat and has a large Hispanic population. The first Europeans to visit Artesia were traders from Spain and Portugal who passed through the area in search of new land to settle. In 1698, Captain Fernando de Vargas explored and photographed Artesia when he was captain of La Navidad Expedition. In 1786, José de Arce y Parra explored the area and named it San Miguel de Artesia after his patron saint. In 1847, Juan Bautista Amejía founded two cattle stations here: Pecos and Chama. The Post Office was established in 1851, but no town development took place until after Mexican Independence in 1846 when several Americans arrived seekingacement for their families left behind during war time in Mexico. A group of men from Albuquerque formed a company to build a post office here called Mesa del Norte which opened on November 15th, 1865 under US Postal Service Agencies Act No 4295-65 entitled "Apostille for Mesa del Norte." The name "Mesa del Norte" means "town by the river". The first school in Artesia was built by Mrs Higueruela about 1875 as an addition to her farmstead on what is now Main Street (west side). After years of struggle with funding issues and community opposition that failed to materialize into anything more than talk or education opportunities for local children, Mrs Higueruela donated her property back to the community in 1905 as a gift “in memory of all our early pioneers who helped make this place what it is today” (Goudreau 2009). After many years struggling with lackadaisical leadership style that saw little value placed upon artesian resources despite its potential for economic development due largely to its location within easy access by Interstate 70 corridor enroute to major metropolitan areas throughout east-central New Mexico; Patsy Higueruela organized efforts led by her daughter Cathy Goudreau spearheaded by Cultural Affairs Manager Doug Weeden Jr., Town Administrator Donny Eligon III., Arts & Culture Coordinator Kathy Kinghorn along with numerous other volunteers resulting finally in construction beginning late 2006/early 2007 atop MsHigueruela's original donation including funds raised through fundraisers such as HulaHoop Nightclub sponsored dance party benefiting Stonington Kiwanis Club; Santa Fe Events District Celebrates 10 Years!

This group fought various skirmishes with Spanish forces before ultimately achieving victory over them on November 19th, 1912. As a result of this struggle, Artesia became one of three towns that sided with Mexico during their war against Spain. Since then, Artesia has frequently been visited by Mexicans who come to commemorate or experience its historical significance firsthand. Additionally, it remains a popular tourist destination due to its picturesque architecture and interesting museums which offer insight into local culture and history from pre-war through contemporary times.
The first Europeans to visit Artesia, New Mexico were Spanish traders in the early 1500s. The area that is now Artesia was part of the Pueblo of Taos before it was given to the Franciscans in 1610. The friars built a convent and church here, which is still standing. In 1849, General Stephen Watts Kearny discovered and explored this area during his ill-fated march from Santa Fe to Arizona. He named the area for General José Arista y Costilla, who had helped him victory over Mexican forces at the Battle of Monterrey in 1846.
