Artesia is a town in Taos County, New Mexico, United States. It was founded in 1881 by Anglo-American settlers from the nearby city of Santa Fe. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. The town's name is derived from Spanish artesanía, meaning "craftsmanship." The first settler to arrive in what is now Artesia was Tomás Romero. He and his family built a cabin near what is now Main Street in 1881. In 1902, citizens of Santa Fe organized an election to select a new mayor for the city; Artesia won selection with over 60% of the vote. The first post office in Artesia opened in 1903. In 1907, residents voted to make Artesia an incorporated municipality; it did so two years later. At the same time, they enacted a ordinance forbidding polygamy within its borders. In 1912, Mayor Abelardo Soto authorized construction of a public library; it opened in 1915. That same year saw the opening of the first high school in what is now Artesia; it was called PNM High School until 1984 when it became part of UNM University's Gillet School District #3
