The town of Artesia grew rapidly during World War II because of its importance as a munitions plant. During World War II, Artesia was known as "the breadbasket of Puebla" because of its production of flour, cornmeal, beans and other food items needed for military personnel and their families. The artesian wells that dot the landscape here were also important for production of gasoline and diesel fuel. However, many people in Artesia are still impacted by wartime industries such as manufacturing jobs that vanished after 1945 when American troops withdrew from Mexico City en masse. Today, Artesia is home to a population of about 1,500 people who are descendants of those who lived here during World War II and post-war years. There are several cultural attractions in town including an art museum called La Casa Vieja which features works by northern Mexican artists; a traditional dance theater called la Casita; and a restaurant called el Mocambo where dishes include local rabbit tacos (served with rice).

By 1900 its population was only 600 people still living in Artesia proper but it continued to be an important cultural center throughout much of New Mexico Territory until federal government efforts at Congresselization effectively dismantled all local governments within 1912-13 when territorial boundaries changed once again - this time making El Paso County one large city with no residual community located outside its boundaries (although there are some scattered remnants remaining today).
