Artesia, New Mexico is a small town located in the state of New Mexico. The population was 901 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The first European to visit Artesia was Manuel Nieto on July 10, 1797. He named it San Francisco de Asís after his patron saint, and founded a mission there in 1805. The presidio (state prison) at Artesia was established on February 14, 1837 by Governor Don Joaquín Baca as part of a campaign to close up concentration camps run by Santa Fe Mayor José Romero. The Presidio served as both jail and base for troops during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). A post office called Artesia was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1906, whenNM became an independent republic,Artesia became its seat of government. In 1912 Elysee Varela y Valdés donated land to build a park that would become known as "Elysee Park". This park has been home to many events over the years such as fairs and concerts since its inauguration including a parade in 2006 organized by Festival Mexicano de Arte Moderno (FMAM). In 1951 NMDE created the City of Albuquerque from parts ofArtesia and Nuevo Laredo municipalities respectively; however Artesia continued to be policed by NMDE's private detachment until 1971 when police forces were integrated into NMDE's municipal government under an agreement with Iberian American University students who had lobbied for this change. On November 3rd 1990 Artsia voters passed an ordinance legalizing gay marriage which took effect on January 1st 1991; however jurisdictional issues continue to prevent same sex marriage from taking place here officially due to lack of jurisdiction withinNMDE itself despite repeated attempts by both public officials and Academicians alike
