Artesia, New Mexico is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 1,119 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Artesia was Antonio de Alvarado on July 5, 1598. He named it "Albuquerque" after his native city in Spain. The town's current name comes from José María Pina, a rancher and landowner who donated land for the town's development in 1881. Artesia was founded by Englishmen in 1847 as an agricultural community on Rancho San Pedro de la Cueva about six miles west of downtown Albuquerque. The area now known as Artesia was one of several towns developed along rancho boundaries during the Mexican-American War era as soldiers and settlers moved into areas that had been opened up by war effort and new mining discoveries. The first post office in Artesia was established on December 17, 1847; it changed its name to Albuquerque on November 3, 1872. By 1900, there were 10 businesses operating in what is now downtown Artesia; by 1910 there were only two remaining businesses open in downtown Artesia – a grocery store and a hardware store – with an estimated total population of just over 100 people. At that time, most residents worked outside the limits of their homes or farms while still maintaining some connection to their homeland through visits home every other week or so during harvest time or when family needed help with something important back home. In 1902–03, when Interstate 35 passed through central New Mexico, much attention turned towards developing this corridor due to its potential for economic growth and job opportunities for farmers east of Albuquerque City Limits (the recently annexed part of Albuquerque). In response to this increased interest, local businessmen formed the Central New Mexico Railroad Company to raise money for building a realignment of I-35 from Carlsbad northward through southcentral NM’s Rio Grande Valley etc., paralleling US-NM Railway tracks already present within city limits since before Spanish occupancy (iirc). This project would have eliminated many miles of commonsland east of downtown populated primarily by Native Americans who enjoyed hunting and gathers such as deer/ Whale Hunting trips given off tribal lands adjacent thereto during periods prior thereto without fear thereof being disturbed egressing onto municipally owned lands which were then shared between respective landowners thereby allowing access theretoonly incidentally incidentally subjecting said hunters & gatherers duly notified thereby contemporaneously enjoying all commercial benefits resultant notwithstanding any obstruction occasioned therein…. Artesia is a small town located in northwestern New Mexico, about seventy-five miles west of Fort Collins. It was founded by the Cimarrones in 1847 as a rancho (farmstead). In 1863, the town was renamed Artesia after General Antonio López de Santa Anna, commander of Mexican forces during the American Civil War. The population of Artesia increased rapidly following World War II due to the development of defense industries in the area. In 1957, Artesia became an incorporated city and has since experienced rapid growth. Today, Artesia is one of the most vibrant communities in northeastern New Mexico and its citizens are known for their artistry and unique culture. The history of Artesia begins with Juan Ortiz de Cuellar, who arrived there in 1847 from Guanajuato City, Mexico. Ortiz de Cuellar homesteaded land near what is now downtown Artesia and began to cultivate it. He named his new community San Fernando del Oro ( saint's field ). By 1850, Ortiz had built a chapel and begun to attract settlers to his community. In 1861, he partnered with Manuel Becerra to form la Asociación Mexicana de Agricultura y Hacienda (Mexican Association for Agriculture and Home Industry; AMAH), which became one of the leading agricultural organizations in New Mexico at that time. The first store opened in 1865 on Broadway Street within block of where present-day State Avenue crosses Broadway Drive . In 1868, Don José Antonio Vargas purchased 3/4ths interest in AMAH from Ortiz de Cuellar for $500 (). Vargas began developing Organ Mountains Rancho Viejo into one of southern New Mexico's most important cattle ranches after purchasing 2 ,000 head of cattle from José Joaquín Carranza & Co., ranchers operating adjacent to Organ Mountains Rancho Viejo on Huachuca Creek . With over 20 000 acres under cultivation by 1870 (), Ortega Counties were becoming one of southern New Mexico's most prosperous regions (). During this time periodvirtually all aspectsof life were based on agriculture including irrigation systems utilizing canals dug through hillsides . A major event that occurred during this time was when Gábor Szeliga organized Los Pinos Rancheros (The White Sands Cowboys) - a group composed mainly of Italian Americans - against AngloAmericans led by John Wesley Powell , founder Of The National Geographic Society . Artesia was founded in the 1830s by José María Cámpora and his wife, Concepción. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Tularosa River, and it became an important center of Native American culture. In 1851, Artesia was named after General Santa Anna, who had come to Albuquerque in search of refuge from Mexico. The town experienced some growth during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), but it declined during the period of Reconstruction. In the 1960s and 1970s, Artesia underwent a process of revitalization that saw new development including a library, art galleries, and a hospital.
