Artesia is a small town in the Mexican state of New Mexico. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Reynosa Municipality. The settlement began as a Native American village on the east bank of the Rio Grande, about northeast of present-day Artesia. The first European to visit Artesia was Pánfilo de Narváez, who stopped there in 1519 and named it after his native city of Burgos, Spain. Spanish traders and travelers visited Artesia intermittently from 1602 to 1821, but no permanent settlements were established until 1845 when José María Chaves erected a small adobe jail and stockade on what is now Main Street. From here he issued warrants for Franciscans to build churches and other ecclesiastical buildings in what would become the larger town of Artesia. In 1886 New Mexico Statehood was granted to both New Mexico Territory (northwest corner of which included most of what is now northwestern Artesia) and Mexican State of Nuevo León; when both states were combined they became one new Mexican state, called Coahuila y Tejas. On July 16, 1912 Fiesta de las Américas (the Ulysses S Grant Birthday Celebration), or "Fiesta America", took place in all 19 counties comprising that new state; artesianatarios—watercolorists—were among those honored with badges, criticism and patronage at this annual event Some artists associated with this celebration include Francisco Goya y Luz (1809-1893), José Clemente Orozco (1868-1946), Justo Canales Montañez (1886-1969) and Salvador Dalí (1904-1996).
