Artesia, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Puebla. The population was 3,812 as of 2010. It is the county seat for Puebla County. Artesia has a humid subtropical climate, with average temperatures ranging from about 71 degrees to 106 degrees Fahrenheit (24° to 43°C). The area that now makes up Artesia was first populated by the Totonacs, who were Native Americans who lived on the east side of what is now Artesia. After Spanish settlers arrived in this area in 1821 and began developing it, they named it after an old Spanish settlement called Atengo de Artesia—or "Artesian Town." The name stuck and during its earliest years, Artesia was home to around 100 people. In 1839, when Mexico became a United States territory after the Mexican-American War, Artesanians voted to join the new country. The community's growth continued during and after World War II thanks to various oil production projects in nearby San Angelo and other parts of Puebla; however, post-World War II growth slowed due to low levels of economic activity and competition from larger towns. However, some recent development has led to renewed interest in Artesian life: In 2008–2009, art galleries opened up shop in the local shopping center; in 2009–2010 construction began on a $10 million downtown arts complex that will include an open-air theater and public square; and lastly redevelopment plans are underway for both an outdoor movie theater (now closed) as well as additional housing units around town. These developments reflect growing awareness among residents of how important art can be both economically and culturally for their community—and provide hope for further growth over time.
