On December 1, 1847, after Mexican president Fernando De la Garza approved a bill creating Nuevo México (New Mexico), Artesia became part of that new territory. At its peak in 1930, artesanía accounted for over 50% of all retail sales in Tijuana and generated more than $2 million in economic activity alone. Today, however, artesanía's importance has waned as production techniques have changed and online sales have become more prevalent; nonetheless, it still plays an important role within Tijuana's cultural life and economy.

The first mayor of Artesia was Lorenzo Ortiz and he held office from 1888 to 1889. From 1896 to 1907, Artesia had its own school board which also provided education for local children. Throughout its history, Artesia has been home to many notable citizens including Judge Manuel Cárdenas (1860-1937), Pancho Villa (1920-1946), Fidel Castro (1927-1996), and Juan José Torreblanca (1898-1976).
