The name Artesia comes from Spanish and means "the place where artisans make things." The first European to visit Artesia was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1540. He journeyed upriver to present-day Albuquerque and then followed what is now Route 66 eastward for about two miles (3 km). There he discovered a group of Native Americans called the Puebloans living among some rocks overlooking the river. After exploring this area further, he decided to stay and explore more of New Mexico before returning home in October 1540. In 1885, while still an Apache Indian chief named Tomahawk led his people against a U.S. cavalry officer named George Armstrong Custer during a cycle of raids that swept across much of Arizona and New Mexico Territory, Artesia's white residents joined with their Apache allies in defense against Custer's forces. By 1887, many white men had moved into Artesia after finding land there through purchase or gift from Apaches or other natives who had been forced out by reservation policies set up by President James Kiefer Buchanan under pressure from American cattle ranchers and gold seekers throughout western North America. The late 1800s were rough times for Artesia as its residents faced social turmoil caused by alcoholism and other addictions; however, business boomed thanks to new transportation methods such as stagecoaches coming down the Rio Grande every day from Albuquerque!
