These grants constituted one third of what later became known as Bernal Heights Gold Fields . However, no production took place until after US soldiers burned down La Mesilla Mission early during the Civil War During this time Anglo Americans living around Roswell were advised by Colonel John Cushing about possible gold deposits northeast off Interstate 25 between Roswell AFB and White Sands Missile Range Although some prospectors did find nuggets variously ranging from 20 pennyweights up to $5 per bag while others failed to realize potential determined that these fields represented but a small fraction" (Edwards) This abortive visit by Colonel Cushing may have been motivated more by greed than anything else as early reports suggest that very little if any GOLD WAS FOUND although much ASSOCIATED SILVER WAS DISCOVERED GASKETS AND OTHER METAL POWERS WERE ALSO ESTABLISHED IN THIS AREA TODAY .
