Alamogordo, New Mexico is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Alamogordo is located in Taos County. It is bordered to the east by Roosevelt National Forest and to the south by Albuquerque, NM. The name "Alamogordo" comes from Alamo Peak (14,912 ft or 4,489 m). The peak has been sighted by Spaniards since 1540 and named for General Antonio de Alamo who fought against Spanish forces on November 16, 1806. Spanish traders first visited what is now Alamogordo in 1795-96 while exploring the region for possible sites for a new Mexican capital city. The town of Alamogordo was founded in 1867 by ranchers who discovered coal seam minerals there. The first store and post office were established in 1870; grist mills were built in 1871 and 1880; and a school was opened in 1881. In 1912 construction began on the current courthouse and jail which were completed in 1915. Manufacturing became an important industry after World War II with production of military supplies, munitions, tires and other items benefiting from competition from more efficient American companies such as Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation. However, during the late 1990s Alamogordo's economy declined as local businesses stopped operations due to increased competition from nearby Albuquerque's growth; however some new businesses have re-emerged since 2000 including a health food store called GardenGrove Health & Wellness Center which opened in 2001 and became one of the largest private employers within Alamogordo limits. Since 2007 Alamogordo has been home to several annual events that celebrate its unique cultural heritage including Fiesta del Vado (Fiesta del Viejo) which celebrates Hispanic culture; Puebloan Festival held annually on July 8th featuring traditional music, dance performances and food booths; Kiwanis Club picnic on Labor Day weekend also known as "Gaslight Picnic" because many light bulbs are used at this event); Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony each year on December 25th followed by Children’s Holiday Parade lasting about two hours until morning with activities throughout downtown streets

Alamogordo is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pecos County seat. Alamogordo is located in the eastern panhandle of New Mexico on the Rio Grande River. The town was founded by Spaniards in 1821 as San Miguel de Allende and named for General Antonio López de Alamogordo, who fought against Spanish forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1861, after a Civil War victory over Confederate forces at Palo Alto Bridge, Union generals Ulysses S. Grant and Philip Sheridan decided to abandon Albuquerque and march through Pecos County to reach Santa Fe from east Texas. They ordered Captain John Chivington to establish a military post at Alamogordo and Chivington recommended its namesake, General Antonio López de Alamogordo, to lead an expedition against these rebels under command of Brigadier General James Waco. On July 12th 1861, López de Alamogordo arrived in Alamogordo with 7 companies of infantry and 1 company of artillery to take up arms against 10 Rebel units under Lieutenant Colonel David Dixon Steele (later Governor of New Mexico). After skirmishing for three days near the mouth of the Rio Grande River with some 200 warriors belonging to Steele's force (reportedly including women and children), Alamo Gomez secured a crossing before retiring back across the river on July 15th 1861 with his meager gains; this event would be immortalized by American author Huckleberry Finn when he refers to "the cavalry action at Alamodome."
