In 1856, gold was discovered at Alamogordo and soon development moved into earnest around the new mine fields and placer claims nearby. By 1870 some 9800 people lived in Alamogordo; by 1880 it had increased to 14500 with over 100 businesses and 7 newspapers. Mining operations were shut down during thepanic pandemic but resumed later that decade when health risks improved. The community experienced economic declines following World War II as transportation links were severed by the war and consumer prices rose elsewhere; however, recent revitalization efforts have seen growth again with several new businesses opened up in recent years including a medical center and two high school districts
