However, the town recovered and saw some major changes during World War I when it became home to the US military airfield at Alamogordo Field. After the war, Alamogordo returned to its original status as an agricultural center with consistent growth over the next few decades. In 1984, Alamogordo became one of sixteen communities located within Navajo Nation boundaries after being annexed by that community. Today, Alamogordo is one of the most vibrant small towns in New Mexico with active businesses and a strong cultural heritage dating back to its Mormon pioneers who founded it more than two hundred years ago. The town is known for its annual Pumpkin Festival which features pumpkin carving contests and other activities specific to this event.
Alamogordo was a small Indian town in New Mexico Territory, located on the east bank of the Rio Grande. It was founded in 1835 by Jicarilla Apache chief Cochise and his followers, and it continued to be an important center of Native American culture until after the Mexican-American War.
