Alamogordo, New Mexico is a small town located in southeastern New Mexico. It is the county seat of Alamogordo County and has a population of about 8,000 people. The name Alamogordo comes from the Spanish word for "mountain." The first permanent settler in Alamogordo was José María Cárdenas who started to homestead land near the present-day downtown area in 1847. The town was founded on November 3, 1849 by settlers led by George Armstrong Custer. The town was named after General Tomahawk's Creek where he had been born. In 1861, the US army burned down part of the village after being ordered to do so by General John Lubbock who thought it would discourage Indian raids into his territory. Alamogordo became an all-white community when white businessmen and farmers moved into the area following Reconstruction which ended in 1865. In 1888, President Grover Cleveland designated Alamogordo as America's capital city due to its location on a high point overlooking both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. In 1897, construction began on what is now Casa Grande National Monument which includes parts of Alamogordo and several other nearby towns including Bisbee, Window Rock, and White Sands Mesa. The monument was dedicated on July 16th, 1932 with ceremonies featuring such luminaries as Franklin D Roosevelt and Adolf Hitler along with local dignitaries including Mayor Harry Swayne and Representative Judd Greggs

Alamogordo is a small town in New Mexico, United States. It was founded by the Caddo people in 1847. The population was 897 at the 2010 census. Alamogordo is located on the NM-2 road about 25 miles northeast of Albuquerque and 50 miles northwest of Santa Fe. The first permanent settlement in what would become Alamogordo was made by men from Texas in 1846. They were interested in finding a place to homestead after their cattle had been driven north to Santa Fe during the Mexican–American War. The site they chose for their capital, which they named San Agustín de la Hacha (St Anthony's Hook), became home to only a few residents until 1849, when an army base was established there and new settlers began arriving, including some Anglo Americans who had recently arrived from New England and Pennsylvania. In 1857, Fort Sumner fell within Ute Apache territory so General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered its abandonment; as consequence, Alamogordo became part of Mexican Territory A while other settlements such as Socorro and Grants Pass were placed under American control. However, American support for the Texan rebel cause caused López de Santa Anna to reestablish control over his troops at Alamogordo early in 1858; by then it had already achieved notoriety as one of the most important military posts on the frontier due to its strategic location between Los Angeles County and New Mexico Territory A. In 1865, following years of wrangling with Congress over boundary changes resulting from Mexicano Unification (the others being Taos County east of Albuquerque proper and Carlsbad Caverns west of Grants Pass), Alamogordo reverted back under Mexican jurisdiction once again but with responsibility for all eastern New Mexico Territory excepting Socorro where local officials continued managing affairs until 1912 when that authority passed thenceforth into American hands via Homestead Act legislation introduced by Senator John Fenton (R-NM). Withdrawal from Mexican territory also brought about economic changes: commercial farming increased while ranching declined due largely to competition from white ranchers near Albuquerque and elsewhere on the Frontier; however, Indian hostilities continued even after Mexicans formally ceded all their land south of Rio Grande River to America effective November 6, 1901 (). The current name given to Alamogordo is "Alamogordo" meaning "site where rivers join." According to historian Roy Jansen this appellation may be derived either from Spanish "alamocha" meaning 'a wide opening' or "'gordon' because Alamo Peak can be seen rising above downtown.'" On December 15th 1898 US forces burned down what remains today's old high school building at 2nd Street & Elm Drive SW in order commemorate United States participation in World War I; prior thereto all buildings associated with public education within town limits were razed beginning on October 1st 1899 pursuant to Army Regulation 20-8/1 which authorizes Town Officers "to destroy any structure or property having connection with instruction . . . ." At present day only two remaining structures standing within town boundaries are former churches – St Gregory's Episcopal Church whose cornerstone was laid July 9th 1889 by Bishop Augustus Howard Morrison*†††*,*‡*“and Our Lady Of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church which replaced an earlier frame building erected circa 1875 on Main Street”— both now functioning as private residences*.* * * *further information about these churches will be available upon request
Alamogordo was founded in 1847 by the Pecos and Rio Grande families, who were among the earliest settlers in what is now New Mexico. The town quickly became a thriving community, and by 1851 it had a population of over 1,000 people. The town's growth continued during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, thanks to its rich mineral resources and its location on the Trans-Pecos River. In 1960 Alamogordo became an incorporated municipality.
