Alamogordo, New Mexico is a small town in the American state of New Mexico. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Albuquerque and about 20 miles (30 km) west of Roswell. The population was 998 at the 2000 census. Alamogordo has been a community since 1881, when it was founded by Spanish settlers as ranchos de la Vega. The name Alamogordo comes from the word "alamo" meaning an oak tree. The first white people to arrive in this area were Anglo-Irish cartographers named John Fenton and His party in 1827. They mapped out what is now part of northwestern New Mexico on their way to Santa Fe and beyond. In 1881, José María Escobar established a small trading post near what is now Alamogordo with his brother Miguel Escobar and other Hispanic pioneers. Mexican Americans soon started farming in this area, starting a large cattle ranching operation that continues to this day. In 1912, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the Navajo Apache Indians to attack the White Sands Army Range south of Alamogordo because he believed they were plundering military supplies being sent there by General Ulysses S Grant's army. The NavajoApaches fought back fiercely but lost heavily; most died as result of injuries sustained during the engagement or from capture by Allied forces subsequent to it. This event marked one point in history where Native Americans successfully resisted white encroachment onto their ancestral land - an achievement which has been repeatedly lauded by historians since then as an example of Native self-determination against outside aggression). After World War II, many Latino immigrants came to Alamogordo seeking work in agriculture or construction due to high unemployment rates in postwar America; however, these newcomers also brought with them their own social mores and traditions which clashed with those of local Anglo residents over matters such as grocery shopping or church attendance.
