Alamogordo is a small town in the south-central area of New Mexico. The population was 4,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1867, and has been an important center for agriculture and ranching since then. The town was first named Indianola, but it changed its name to Alamogordo in honor of General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War. As a result of its importance as a military post during that time, Alamogordo also became known as "The Blade Capital of the World."
