In 1844, United States Cavalry Captain John Gibbon established a post at San Fernando (now Alamogordo) on Santa Fe Trail in order to protect travelers between Albuquerque and Canon City during the Mexican-American War. The fort served as a base for troops until it was destroyed by an attack from Apache Scouts in 1846. The remains of Gibbon's fort are today located near present day downtown Alamogordo. The first handguns were brought overland from New York City in 1849 by Major Samuel Morse along with his friend George Stephenson. They arrived at Santa Fe Plaza where they were unloaded and stored before being brought upriver to Fort Defiance on July 4th, 1850 where they were used against Native Americans living near Trinidad Bridge who had taken refuge there after an army invasion force burned their village two weeks earlier. The Alamogordo Placer Gold Rush began on January 24, 1849 with a group of prospectors led by George P. recover and led by J.P. Morgan over the San Miguel River in present-day New Mexico Territory. By March, they had found gold near the village of Alamogordo and were making plans to claim the placer mining sites when they were alerted to an American warship anchored just off shore. The USS Constitution was commanded by Commodore John Rodgers and its crew consisted of 306 men including 29 women (of whom only one died). They discovered that there was no gold at Alamogordo but did find valuable copper and other minerals nearby worth $2 million dollars in today's money. After a few weeks exploring further west, the Constitution sailed back home with a cargo of treasure - more than 2,000 metric tons of silver, gold and other minerals from what is now southern New Mexico Territory. This event is commonly known as the "Alamogordo Expedition." The discovery opened up new areas for exploration in what are now Arizona, Nevada and California; it also increased demand for goods coming out of New Mexico because people could now afford to purchase goods made abroad instead of simply smuggling them into the territory like before. The area became known as "the Golden State" because so much wealth had been found hereabouts. In fact, some say that if it wasn't for the discoveries at Alamogordo, California would have become first place during this time period since it was then thought that all silver might be hidden in various mines across America's West Coast - something which never happened however due to advances in technology IRSploitations such as plateaus discovering large quantities of silver (and thus wealth) near Sacrament City outside Sacramento during 1859-60 revealed many small rich veins all around these regions).
