In 1886, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla established San Isidro Mission in what is now eastern Alamogordo Township along modern Highway 54. This mission was one of three missions established by Father Lara in 1871-72 east of Pecos County seat Antelope Wells when he took over from Don José Maria Carrera as pastor general of all New Mexico after his death at age 47 on November 1, 1870 during an expedition against Apache tribal forces near Tucson Arizona Territory (present day Phoenix Arizona). As time passed more businesses opened up such as grocery stores shoe stores etc...
