The town has a public library and two churches: Our Lady of the Rocks Catholic Church and First Baptist Church.

Alamogordo, New Mexico is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of New Mexico. It was founded by Father Hector Aguilar and his wife Pascuala in 1835 as an adobe village on the San Miguel River. The name Alamogordo comes from the Nahuatl word amatl, meaning "place where there are many flowers." The town was originally called Buena Vista because it was located near a military post named Buena Vista Ranch. The first European to visit Alamogordo was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1540, when he and three companions explored the region for Spanish traders. In 1664, Don Diego Rivera y Costilla discovered petroleum at Alamogordo and began producing oil leases here. By 1892, production had increased to include both gasoline and kerosene products; today it continues as a mixed-gasoline manufacturing center with some light manufacturing also taking place in other industries such as plastics and appliances. In 1916, during World War I, Alamogordo became one of several locations across America bombed by German air forces during World War I as part of their "Operation Airdrop." After the war ended, most of these factories were relocated to Germany or Italy but two remained in Alamogordo—the American Electric Power Company's aluminum smelter (now owned by Alpha Natural Resources) and General Motors' new engine plant (now part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). In 1972, when New Mexico became a state, Alamogordo's mayor Brigham Young announced that the city would become its capital permanent seat; this designation followed earlier plans by Alcalde John Sánchez to move City Hall from nearby Socorro to Alamogordo if Statehood were granted to New Mexico. As with all capital cities throughout the United States after statehood (and before), however, no action took place until 1975 when then-Governor Richard Nixon designated Alameda County seat – still Socorro – for Albuquerque instead due to population growth within that county while Alamogordonians continued lobbying for their own municipal seat.
