The monument includes sites such as Wright's Trading Post and Camp Navajo along with other historical landmarks within its boundaries including residences built between 1915 and 1925 on land that once belonged to Kaufman Ranch near Socorro Springs Lake. Alamogordo is home to many businesses and cultural institutions related to their respective fields including: Presbyterian Church (USA), University of New Mexico School of Veterinary Medicine (USA), San Juan Military Academy (Mexico), American Folklife Center & Museum (USA), and Hispanic Cultural Center (Mexico). The townsite itself straddles both banks of this river; when viewed downriver it seems tiny next to La Hoya Peak which reaches an altitude of 605 feet (190 m). To see it up close you need only walk out onto San Miguel Street which runs parallel to La Vibora Boulevard which leads into downtown Alamogordo past many shops until you reach Coopersmith Park where you can buy your first ice cream cone from Roy Rogers’s soda fountain! Inland throughout much of this area are small creeks such as Musa Creek that meander through open country before joining one or more larger rivers near their confluence such as Coopersmith Creek which flows into Lake Powell just outside Alamo Gorman Airport

The first white settlers in Alamogordo were two brothers, George Washington and David Ramsey, who arrived in 1829. They founded a small town on the east side of what is now Alamogordo County. The townsite name (meaning "site of many waters") was given to it by its founders because they saw many springs near their settlement. The first post office in Alamogordo was established in 1836, and mail deliveries began from a small building on Main Street in 1841. A courthouse and jail were built about 1840, and other public buildings followed over time including an opera house (1861), school (1875), hospital (1912), library (1927), firehall (1964), and vodka distillery (2007). In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General John Buford attacked Union forces at Alamogordo Pass north of the city with three thousand men plus eight cannons. The attack failed but resulted in several hundred casualties for both sides; one resident said that "the smoke from that cannonade still hangs around like a dream". The city's largest employer until 2007 was the local military unit called Fort Bliss which has since been replaced by Albuquerque government agencies such as the Department of Corrections or Public Safety Headquarters
