In 1692 Don Manuel Micheltorena built a small Spanish mission in what is now Alamogordo on the San Juan River near present-day Gallup. This mission became known as La Compañía Franciscana de Nuestra Señora De los Dolores (The Franciscan Company of Our Lady Of Deliverance). In 1821, gold was discovered at Placitas in Apache County and soon thereafter Alamogordo became one of the most important mining towns in New Mexico because it had access to both gold and silver resources. Gold discoveries continued until 1848 when production stopped entirely because of problems with German miners working adjacent claims that were not licensed by New Mexico authorities. Prior to 1850 there were few dwellings or businesses within Alamogordon proper; most residents engaged in agriculture or other manual pursuits such as ranching or blacksmithing for subsistence income while Shield Rock claims held significant amounts of precious metals which were shipped downriver for processing into coins and jewelry.) The post office at Alamogordon opened on February 1, 1860; it remained open until December 31, 1915 ().
