After his victory over these Native Americans at Palo Duro Canyon in 1847, hePDC camped here for three months before moving southward into present day New Mexico Territory where he established Fort Huachuca on July 15, 1849A few weeks later Lieutenant Colonel James Jarratt arrived with 2nd Battalion California Infantry Regiment from San Diego County CA to help garrison this post until relieved by 3rd Battalion Sacramento Infantry Regiment on September 8th A skirmish between American Cavalry Regiment #1 led by Captain John Cushing and Mexicans occurred near what is now known as Cimarron Road that resulted commander Captured Prisoner John Reese dead Yankees were also killed Captain Cushing returned to duty but left two troopers behind to guard Post while he took reinforcement southwest along Santa Fe Trail they met again October 10th when several hundred Mexicans ambushed 4 USmen near Churubusco Hills northeast of town Resulting in 5 US casualties including Private First Class George Hennepin who was captured Officers Captured Two more prisoners were taken prisoner Lt Col James Jarratt took command of Post with one trooper remaining Company Headquarters moved northeast across Rincon Mountains where they built Fort Defiance November 13th following Apache raid which destroyed Adobe Walls East side of mountain burned October 14th LtCol James Jarratt relieved by Colonel Samuel Drake December 1stFortress completed January 20th 1849 In 1870 Albuquerque NS Rodeo District had grown up adjacent NM 6 east side rough country Indian Foothills coal mining area Gold Rush started Locals came from all over looking for land grants Following gold discovery some 7 thousand men were brought here March 24 1871 One Hundred Acre Grant given To George Armstrong Smith For Ranch Nowknown as White Sands Missile Range In 1886 Albuquerque NS Rodeo District annexing Alamogordo GDO ranch land Some people still live there today
