In 1875–76 Colonel James Hinton established a wagon road from Roswell to Albuquerque through what is now southernmost New Mexico Territory; this road led directly to Fort Sumner on the Rio Grande River across from present day Roswell;Hinton hoped this road would allow goods brought into NewMexico by stagecoaches and traders through Albuquerque finally reach America's markets east of Socorro rather than waiting weeks or even days for wagons loaded with Produce from Chihuahua and Durango nominally taxed by American Eagle stores on I-10 just south of Puebla (now Las Cruces). This wagon road did not exist however because Governor Hiram Johnson vetoed López de Santa Anna's plan calling it an " Invasion route." However Hinton continued working on his project until he received help from Captain John McLaughlin who purchased 3 acres along what is now USNM Route 66 in southeastern NM near Cohoes Lake which he called McLaughlin Ranch after himself - thus starting the Gadsden County Trail which linked McClaughlin Ranch with Leon Springs about 10 miles northwest of modern Alamogordo & today's Gadsden County Sheriff's Office Headquarters complex east off USNMRoute 66 between mileposts 17 & 19 within Gadsden County limits
The Alamogordo Apache War was fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848. The war resulted in the deaths of at least 50,000 people and destroyed much of what is now western New Mexico.
