Alamogordo, New Mexico is the location of a U.S. military post during the Mexican-American War and, later, in the American Civil War. The town was founded by Captain George Washington Maxwell in 1867 as Fort Maxwell on an unprotected bluff overlooking the Rio Grande. It was renamed Alamogordo in honor of General Pershing's Expedition against Pancho Villa in 1916. The fortifications at Alamogordo were built to protect important wagon train routes from raiding Mexicans and Apaches. The first commandant of Fort Maxwell was Major John Sweeny; Sub Lieutenant James Witherspoon commanded artillery battery #1; Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Herrick commanding artillery battery #2; and Second Lieutenant Charles Fenton commandant infantry battalion (3rd Regiment) In 1861, Texas Rangers led by Confederate general Antonio López attacked the wagon trains traveling through New Mexico Territory under the leadership of General Sam Houston. A combined force of United States cavalry and infantry action resulted in routing most of these raiders and capturing many horses, supplies, weapons, prisoners and civilian hostages. This event is also celebrated as "theraid" or "the battle for Alamogordo". A smallpox epidemic that struck New Mexico in 1875 killed more than 350 people including soldiers, civilians and Native Americans living near the Bliss River canyon where White Sands Missile Range now stands. The Number 5 Cavalry Barracks still stands at White Sands Missile Range—was it built there specifically to house troops stricken with smallpox? It seems likely that some portion of Alamogordo's garrison must have been quarantined there because no other barracks were available nearby when smallpox began spreading through southern New Mexico in earnest on October 8th 1865 ( exactly one year after President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 10368). Although all but two hundred men who contracted smallpox died within three months after exhibit due to their highly infectious state, this episode has been cited as one reason why Army Smallpox Control College facilities became operational soon thereafter rather than being delayed until better protection could be erected against future outbreaksthrottled by political correctness norms today."
Alamogordo was founded in 1867 by José María de la Altia, a trader from Zacatecas. The town became an important regional center for cotton and sheep production, and experienced rapid growth during its early years. However, Alamogordo's prosperity did not last long due to the Panic of 1878. In response to the financial crisis, Alamo City erected a Protective Board in 1881 to prevent further economic decline. Despite this effort, Alamogordo experienced another period of rapid growth in the late 19th century; however, by 1922 it had become a smalltown with few amenities and limited job opportunities. In the 1920s and 1930s Alamogordo experienced significant population turnover due to increasing numbers of Mexicans coming to work in the local economy. However, following World War II Alamogordo gradually regained some of its former prominence as a business and academic center.
