In 1903–04, when Route 66 opened up new territory east of Albuquerque across from present-day White Sands Missile Range, Alamogordo saw increased traffic due to its location close to military activity and offers potential business opportunities for entrepreneurs looking for strategic footholds in one of America's most rapidly developing regions. Businesses quickly grew around Route 66 while also expanding into other industries such as motor vehicle manufacturing and tourism until Interstate 20 cut through Alamogordo limits in 1990s; this effectively ended much economic development around Main Street today
