American forces landed in New Mexico on November 16, 1846 and skirmished with Mexico for several weeks before hostilities ceased on December 20. On February 2, 1847, U.S. Major General James W. Kearny issued an order authorizing the purchase of munitions from local traders in Los Angeles County for use by American troops in the Mexican-American War. The order specified that no ammunition could be taken from civilian sources without prior written consent from the county sheriff or his deputies. The first shipment of munitions arrived at Alamogordo on March 3, 1847; it included cannon and rifle bullets, powder and shot, tents and other supplies necessary for military encampments in New Mexico Territory. By May 1st, 1847, total shipments had reached $12,500 worth of goods. During the Mexican-American War Ammunition production was primarily carried out by private firms within California and Nevada as well as by a few small companies within New Mexico Territory ( principally those operated by miners). However due to political unrest in both countries following the war’s conclusion there was a large increase in production by government agencies ( principally those run by President Polk) up until 1865 when it largely ceased due to lack of demand.
