The Alamogordo Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1886. The club's first target rifle was built by George Stephenson, a blacksmith in the town of Alamogordo. The club acquired its first pistol in 1892. In 1903, the club purchased its first hunting rifle. That same year, the club erected a firing platform for their rifles on a hill in town square. In 1912, the club increased their size to two hundred members and elected Orville Burton as its president. Theclub constructed a large clubhouse on University Avenue in 1921-22. From 1922 through 1932, theclub operated as an agricultural society with Social Work being its main focus until it merged with another organization that year to become the Alamogordo Rifle and Pistol Club (ARPC). In 1934, ARPC became one of thirteen organizations forming what is now known as NRA (National Rifle Association). At that time membership totaled over five thousand individuals across all fifty states and Puerto Rico! On July 1st of that year, both the ARPC & NRA amalgamated into one entity under new management - NRA National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). Since then NSSF has been responsible for carrying out many of NRA's core values including education and public safety programming throughout America's firearm industry; developing innovative firearms technologies; providing support to member clubs and individual shooters around the world; managing finances for both entities; and maintaining contact between NSSF Executive Directors &ehancee Clubs worldwide
