In 1887, Alamogordo residents W.H. and A.F. Smith purchased a shotgun from Captain John Hennessey of the New Mexico Volunteers for use in hunting small game. The shotguns were soon being used to hunt large game such as deer, elk, and “wild hogs” (horses) in the area. In 1895, Captain John Hennessey organized the first season of airgun shooting in Alamogordo using revolvers to shoot at targets on a hill east of town. In 1889, later Alcalde Francisco Ortiz granted land in the heart of downtown to establish a public square named Plaza de la Reforma; this came about because Almogordo rapidly became one of New Mexico's most prosperous communities due to its location as a key rail junction for mining operations in north-central New Mexico and throughout southern Colorado during this time period
