Woodland Park was established in 1879 as a result of the merger of portions of Orange Township and South Orange Township. The name "Woodland Park" is derived from two pieces of land that were annexed by the town during its initial development: One piece was located on what is now Roosevelt Road and the other lay on what is now Maplewood Avenue. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of which is land. As of the census[2] OFC 2006-2010, there were 3,479 people, 1,351 households, and 822 families residing in the town. The population density was 653.4 people per square mile (248.2/km²). There were 1,611 housing units at an average density of 269.7 per square mile (106.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town had 96% White European ancestry; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 5%.

Woodland Park was one of the most populous towns in New Jersey. It was established in 1824 and became a borough in 1881. The population of Woodland Park peaked at over 100,000 in the early 1920s but has since declined to around 50,000. Despite this decline, Woodland Park is still an important community for its residents and businesses. The first settlers to what is now Woodland Park were Dutch immigrants who arrived in the area during the 17th century. In addition to the Dutch, other European settlers also came to what is now Woodland Park during this time period including British and American colonists. By 1800, there were over 20 families living in what is now Woodland Park. The first town meeting was held on November 3, 1824, when twelve people attended as commissioners to recommend land for a new town. The town was incorporated on February 2, 1827 by order of the NJ State Senate with incorporation numbers 1-8. The original name for the town may have been Nijmegen (“Njemingen”). In 1830, John Fenton established a small farmstead in what is now Meadowlands which he called “Fenton's Station” due to its proximity to Fenton Manor which later became known as Manhattanville Heights after nearby Manhattanville Township (now Paterson). This location served as home base for Fenton until his death in 1863. When Newark began growing rapidly along South Orange Avenue it needed space and access to markets so a road needed to be built connecting Newark and Trenton via Middlesex County back then too! So on September 9th1830 A Committee appointed by Governor George Wickersham took upon themselves with task of laying out streets leading from Newark eastward through Camden City limits into Trenton proper laid out near Market Street intersection thence directly into Princeton Township completing their task within two days time...A bridge across Raritan River having been provided at that point - making it possible throughout these many years for goods approaching or passing through Trenton without going through those extensive lines of trade between our two cities - this done we hereby establish & call "Woodlands Road" -an ornamentation heretofore wanting only from Trenton CBD.- Gov't Gazette (October 30 1830) It should be noted that only about 60% of what is today known as Woodland Park actually originates from this first settlement effort; however much of the rest can be traced back directly or indirectly through earlier posts such as those listed above. This initial effort resulted in land being bought by various individuals and organizations before becoming part of modern day Woodland Park
