Woodland Park, NJ is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Area. The town was founded in 1876 by Isidore Woods and others as a small community on the north shore of Lake Monmouth. In 1904 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000. Woodland Park annexed portions of Lindenwood Township in 1916 and again in 1922. The township had a total population of 20,747 when it merged with Woodland Park to form the new municipality. The first white family to live in the present day Woodland Park area were the Kapp brothers who settled there around 1795-1800 on land that now includes most of east Long Branch and parts of west Hackettstown and South Hackettstown townships. John Kapp's brother Isaac moved from Philadelphia about 1800 to start farming thereabouts; he eventually died leaving four children - Job (1799-1867), Anna (1801-1868), Ellen (1803-1936) and Mary (1805-1900). One daughter also married George Haddon (1797-1862) who was born at Lebanon Township near White Plains Junction before moving to Easton where he owned much property before his death at age ninety five years old while living on Broad Street near present day West Side Avenue in Easton villagemindedly named after him - George Haddon's Hill which still stands today as one mile wide (.6 km), six miles long (.9 km) and two miles high (.8 m). Woodland Park is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. Woodland Park was incorporated on February 24, 1916. The first settler in what is now Woodland Park was John Atwater who built his home on the site of what is now the Brookside Shopping Center on October 3, 1874. He and his wife Mary moved into their home until they were able to purchase land adjoining Willingboro Township for $2 per acre (0.68 km²). It wasn’t until after World War I when many farmers sold their properties in Willingboro Township because of the war effort and new taxes being levied that the Atwater family had enough space to build a house on their farmstead totaling . They named it “Atwater Woods”. On July 1, 1919, Westwood became an independent municipality with its own government under the name of "Westwood Borough". On December 17 of that same year, both municipalities merged into one under the name "Woodland Park". On January 1st 1927 all governmental functions were transferred from "Westwood Borough" to "Woodland Park Borough". The borough's history can be traced back to 1916 when it was established as a result of legislation passed by New Jersey Legislature which authorized township mergers across county lines in order to comply with state mandates regarding municipal consolidation. That year saw construction of Brookside Shopping Center - originally located outside of town - and nearby homes began popping up throughout town as residents migrated from other townships within Bergen County towards what would become their new home. The boundary between what is now New Jersey and Pennsylvania was not established until 1777, when the Treaty of Paris designated the eastern border as a line running from Princeton, NJ to Delaware River. In 1814, Congress passed an act creating Camden County, NJ out of portions of Hunterdon and Morris Counties. The county was created because of outbreaks of disease brought about by the American Revolution and because there was no available land for expansion in either direction. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed a bill creating Morristown Township within Camden County. The township had been proposed by John McMillin and included part of what is now South Brunswick Township. The township was named after General James Monmouth who led an American army during the War of 1812. In 1846, Congress passed an act setting up a new state called New Jersey with its own government and borders. As part of this act,Morristown Township became part of Middlesex County. For many years it functioned as a separate town within Middlesex County but eventually became one large municipality when it merged with other municipalities within Middlesex County in 1965. In 1971, Woodland Park became one of two communities (the other being Paramus) to be incorporated into Bergen County following passage of legislation giving Bergen County more power over its residents' personal finances than did prior counties.
