The city was founded in 1871 by Danish immigrants and has been growing steadily since its incorporation. It is the second most populous municipality in Madison County after Paterson and home to some of the oldest commercial districts in the area. The City of Woodland Park is located on the eastern edge of centralMadison County and straddles both banks of the Hackensack River while also lying within a mile of both Princeton University and Rutgers University's undergraduate campuses. They built homes near where they now live on what became known as Sorenson Hill. At first all settlers were men, but soon enough women arrived as well to help raise children and operate farms out west during those early years when there was no telephone or electricity for miles around! In 1875 one family, The Kents, donated land for school purposes which led to an increase in enrollment at local schools over time from just a few students to nearly 400 over fifty years! In 1908-1909 four taxpayers - Mrs. Lillian Taylor (widow), Mrs. H C Baldwin (daughter-in-law), Mr. James Dolan (senior citizen) - contributed $5,000 towards construction of First Presbyterian Church which stands today as one of Woodland Park’s defining symbols – not only because it represents community support for religious education but also because it represented more than simply funding for church building; this donation underscored how much villagers enjoyed associating with their new town – forming clubs such as Masonic lodges helped keep things alive long after residents had moved away elsewhere! The name "Woodland Park" was first given to the community by George Washington in 1795 when he founded a farmstead there. In 1814, the area became part of Bergen County and was named Forest Hills after Major General Amos Woodruff who served as its first sheriff. In 1869, Forest Hills lost its land to what is now Parsippany Township and it was renamed Woodland Park. The borough was created on November 4, 1955 from portions of Parsippany Township. It lies at an elevation of 940 feet (291 m). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all of it land. As of the 2010 United States Census, Woodland Park had a population of 34,848 – making it one of New Jersey's most populous municipalities. It is also one of its most diverse with over 100 different ancestries represented among its residents according to2011 census data . The median household income for Woodland Park residents is $101,512 (the highest in New Jersey), while poverty rates are low at 7%. The borough's public school system provides education through kindergarten through eighth grade along with full-day high school instruction for ninth through twelfth grades statewide via Common Core Standards aligned with state standards; special needs students are provided by private schools operating within town limits
