Woodland Park is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,853 and the size of the town was 9 square miles (24 km2). The name is derived from American chestnut tree woodland. The first settler in what is now Woodland Park was John Dickinson in 1780. The area that makes up Woodland Park was part of Perth Amboy until 1814 when it became part of Middlesex County. In 1825, a group of farmers founded the village of West Orange and developed a road through the woods to connect their villages. In 1847, James Knoppers added 5 acres (2 ha) to West Orange for woodlot development. In 1870, Dutchman Cornelius Van Dyke bought 160 acres (65 ha) east of present-day Woodland Park from Simon Cameron for $10 per acre ($100/ha). Van Dyke started to clear land and built a gristmill on his new land which served as an early center for community life and farming. In 1876, he donated another 30 acres (12 ha) to make way for what would become Northwood Cemetery. By 1900, much of what are now downtown streets were laid out including Second Street between Elm and Maple Streets; Third Street between Center Boulevard and Read Road; Fourth Street between Spring Garden Avenue and Purchase Road; Fifth Street between Elmhurst Avenue and Lawn Drive; Sixth Street between Crescent Heights Boulevard and Weehawken Avenue; SeventhStreet between Pemberton Place Boulevardand Cherry Valley Road. Woodland Park is a small town in the borough of Camden, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,545 at the 2010 census. Woodland Park was founded in 1876 as a community on land that now includes much of the modern-day town. The first settler in what is now Woodland Park was John Dickinson who purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of forested land west of Camden in 1876. The community grew quickly and by 1880 had a population of 350 people. In 1886, Edward Payson bought 1,500 acres (650 ha) from Dickinson and developed it into an agricultural township with a post office and nine churches. By 1890, the population had grown to 2,000 people and woodlands were being cut for lumber along Utopia Road which ran through the center of town. In 1903, the Township decided to annex portions of neighboring Camden so that its own government could be established without depending on the aid or assistance of other municipalities. This action created one of the most significant demographics changes in Maplewood Township until its incorporation as Camden County in 1974: Outwentlanders increasingly moved to new townships while residents within WoodlandPark retained their homes and businesses within their old hometowns; this helped keep local businesses alive even as larger ones relocated across county lines during economic fluctuations. The first post office opened in 1905 and continued service until 1963 when it merger with Bloomfield Township to formBloomfield Township Borough Office #1 which still serves today as NJPOST's main branch headquarters across Sunrise Highway from Bradley International Airport

The first European to arrive was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who explored this part of North America in 1524. He found an area that he called "New Jersey." The area became part of Great Britain after the Seven Years' War ended in 1763. The British granted land to various tribes, including the Lenape, in order to keep them from moving into British territory.
