The first settlers in Woodland Park, New Jersey were the Dutch. The first European to set foot on what is now Woodland Park was Johannes de Vries in 1664. In 1701, a group of Englishmen known as the Vickers arrived and set up a farm near what is now Livingston Avenue and Easton Road. In 1714, British forces burned down the farm that Vickers had settled on and they abandoned it. The next year, another group of Englishmen, this time named Dunbar arrived and established a farm on what is now Elm Street and Westwood Avenue. The Farmstead Museum currently houses artifacts from both these pioneer times. In 1800, John Nicholson bought land in present-day Woodland Park from the Dutch for $1 per acre. He began construction of his home there and called it "Nicholson's Camp". Nicholson's Camp became one of the earliest homes in what is now Woodland Park Township. On May 3, 1802, when NJ Constitution was ratified, Nicholson became the first township trustee with his property located west of Cherry Hill Road
