Woodland Park was created on April 1, 1919 from portions of Township 0287 and was named for the woodlands around it. The borough is located in Bergen County and borders Hackensack to the north, Midtown to the east, Passaic to the south and Weehawken to the west. It sits on a plateau that rises abruptly from Newark Bay between two ridges of hills known as "The Humps". The borough's maximum width is just over . According to the 2000 Census, Woodland Park had a total area of ; of this, (or 68%) is land and (or 32%) is water. According to early reports of local history dating back to 1824, Woodland Park was inhabited by Native Americans who hunted deer and other game in its rolling woodlands. On September 10th that year an order arrived from General George Washington asking all frontier settlers in what became New Jersey not only “to leave their habitations immediately” but also take possession of all square miles within three miles of Morristown where he had been ordered to encampments under one-fourth pay – or go into exile! Johnstown’s lack of space prevented it from being included within this warning; however some men went there anyway with their families after hearing about it through letters sent home by friends living nearer home. In 1828 Captain James Waddell reported seeing five large trees near present day Hackensack which may have been remnant evidence of those days when these areas were managed according to natural resources rather than development considerations later on. By 1834 woodland extending along both banks of Newark Bay had become thickly populated with residences built along tree-lined streets surrounded by open fields used for agricultural purposes such as raising chickens or cows. There were few if any piers or docks established then so river traffic passed through wooden wharves connected byinnumerable small craft lanes leading downriver until reaching Morristown Ferry Landing almost opposite today's Jfk Terminal building where ferries took passengers upstream bound for points further upriver including Paterson and Princeton In 1835 Dutchman Hendrick Stevens came ashore at Woody Point bearing logs he had brought overlanders carrying on foot across open waters from Staten Island via Sandy Hook Lake for fuel supplies before Newfoundland could be reached A survey dated December 9th 1840 shows a community numbering 339 residents consisting mostly aliens – Irishmen among them - gathered around a fire near present day Trenton enjoying baked goods made from potatoes they found growing wild nearby while others chopped down trees near Monmouth Junction ferry landing for timber This group soon numbered more than 500 people followed shortly thereafter by another group numbering 100 plus arriving January 3rd 1841 after driving out elements Of A British Mission led by Revd Dr Samuel Johnson current pastor at All Saints' Church - Stroudsburg now Union City - who having failed To repopulate his original parish received orders From London To Leave... !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! Woodland Park is a borough in the New Jersey metropolitan area, located on the border of Middlesex and Union counties. As of 2010, the population was 17,845. The first recorded mention of Woodland Park appears to be in 1784 when it was part of Cumberland County. The name may derive from an oak tree that stood near the current site of the park. In 1814, as part of a move by Morris and Essex Counties to centralize government control, Woodland Park became a part of Middlesex County. In 1876, Woodland Park was annexed by neighboring Harrison Township; this annexation made it one of three municipalities in Harrison Township that did not become member townships until 1956. The borough's first mayor was John Fenton who served from 1870-1872 under then-Middlesex Mayor Israel Zangwill Jr.. The second mayor was Charles Davenport who served from 1872-1874 under then-Union County Mayor Elijah Smithwick III. In 1896, Woodland Park voters passed an ordinance allowing for municipal incorporation which occurred on February 15th with boundary changes making it one municipality wide for the first time ever. After years of debate over whether or not to allow this measure to pass due to opposition from nearby Boroughs such as Harrison Township (now called North Caldwell) and Elizabethtown (now called Edison), incorporation finally took place on July 1st 1902 with all three municipalities becoming members of the new Camden County government. On October 5th 1924, during World War II, there were several large explosions at munitions plants in Oak Ridge National Laboratory within walking distance of what is now known as Woodland Park; these blasts killed over 100 people and injured thousands more including many local residents who lived near plant sites at that time. The area that is now New Jersey was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and was Exploited by the English in 1664. In 1776, the British captured Fort Washington and renamed it Philadelphia. The area between Princeton and Morristown became known as Centraljersey because so much land there was bought by William Cosby for £10,000 in 1784. In 1814, when Morris Township was formed from parts of Burlington County, most of what is now central Jersey came under Union County.
