In 1869, a group of men from Woodbury, New Jersey founded the American Optical Society. The society would later become the American Astronomical Society. The first meeting of the ASA was held on October 15th, 1869 in an old barn in Mount Holly Township. A total of eighteen people attended the meeting. Because of this small turnout, it was decided that a new location be chosen for future meetings. On December 5th, 1869, a site was chosen and called Scopes Observatory. This location would serve as the home to the ASA until 1923 when they moved to Washington D.C.. The first president of the ASA was Augustus Moulton Marston who served from November 25th, 1870-May 12th, 1875. He was followed by George Edwin Bromfield who served from May 12th-November 9th, 1880. Finally there were two terms without an individual serving as president- Edward Everett Hale on February 3rd 1897 and James Clark Maxwell on January 17th 1902 after Marston resigned due to health problems caused by tuberculosis

Woodbury is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,934 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in what would become Woodbury were farmers who arrived in 1785 and built their homes on the now-demolished lot where Post Road meets Route 9. They named their community after the wooded tract north of Newark that they had seen while surveying their lands. In 1824, John Cranch purchased land northeast of Woodbury from Moses Eldredge and organized it as a township. He named it after his maternal grandfather, George Washington Carrington (1753-1827). In 1873, President Ulysses S. Grant donated land to the township for an Agricultural College which would later be renamed Rutgers University. The college's first president was Augustus Saint John Woolley (1822-92), who served from 1875 until his death in 1888. After Woolley's death, Rutgers granted its own honorary degree to James Giddings (1797-1864) on October 10, 1889 – one of only two degrees given out by that university during its early years. In 1916, Woodbury incorporated as a borough and became part of the new Camden County municipality through merger with neighboring areas including Milford Township and East Orange Township. At this time there were only 2228 residents living in Woodbury Borough; by 2000 its population had increased to over 3900 people within an area comprising 6 wards with a total population of over 6600 people! Woodbury experienced significant growth during World War II due to wartime military production activities which produced many jobs for locals – among them General Motors plant superintendent Samuel Cummings (1914-2001). During subsequent decades portions of the borough have been lost to other municipalities or abandoned altogether but since 2007 much redevelopment has taken place spearheaded by Mayor Robert Fenton with support from State Senator Cory Booker Jr., creating various new businesses and housing developments throughout the borough!
The town of Woodbury was founded in 1781 by the settlers Peter and Catharine White. The first stores were established in 1782, and a post office was opened in 1784. The population grew rapidly after independence from Great Britain, and by 1810 there were 709 residents. In 1820, the town had a school, ice cream parlor, church, and meeting house. In 1824, the first bank was established in the town. The townspeople built a new courthouse in 1832-34 and a jail in 1840-41 to replace an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. A canal was completed through Woodbury in 1845; this helped to spur development of the community as a commercial center. In 1865, Woodbury became part of Bergen County; it remained an incorporated community until 1975 when it became part of New Jersey 101st Airborne Division Base at Paramus.
