Woodbury is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,544 at the 2010 census. Woodbury is part of the Camden-Haddon Heights, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now includes portions of both towns and was first settled by English settlers in 1680. The Dutch who originally lived in the region were expelled from New Netherland in 1664 and fled to Hudson's Bay Company territory on the eastern side of what is now Canada. They founded a small community called Christianshage near present-day Burlington Township (now West Camden). The English colonists arrived at Plymouth Colony in 1624 and soon began settling along the Delaware River. In 1685, William Penn granted land to John Woolridge for his farmstead known as Woolridge's Landing on Lakewood Creek where he built a millrace which still continues to generate power today. In 1714, George Washington explored these lands foraying into what are now Pennsylvania and Maryland with his army during the French and Indian War.. He named them Mount Vernon after Lord Loudoun in Scotland who had sent him word of this land grants that would be available if he could find an ally against France. One important event that occurred during the early days of Woodbury was when George Pemberton arrived from Pennsylvania in 1764 with his family to begin farming here. His arrival marked a turning point for this small community as it became home to some of New Jersey’s earliest settlers. Over time, Pemberton's descendants would continue to contribute significantly to Woodbury's growth both through their agricultural practices and through their political service. In 1844, Abraham Lincoln visited this community while on a campaign trail across New Jersey. At this point in its history, Woodbury had become something quite different than it had previously been - it boasted a population numbering only around 100 people! It wasn't until after World War II that things began to change noticeably within this tightly knit community - with Growth Technology Corporation (GTC) moving into town in 1949 and ensuing economic growth which led to increased social activity and cultural pride among those living hereabouts (Today GTC remains an important part of the local economy). Throughout these years there have also been numerous notable individuals who have resided or worked here including three Governors Of New Jersey: James McGreevey (1991-1994), Chris Christie (2009-2013), Andres Sanchez (2015-2018).
