Woodbury is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,739 at the 2010 census. Woodbury is one of five municipalities in the Bergen County metropolitan area and was part of that county until 1979. The first settlers in what is now Woodbury were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1640. They named their town after Count Hendrik van der Woude, a member of the Dutch East India Company. The town's first school was established in 1784 and its first mayor was Nicholas de Jonge. In 1834, an act of Congress designated all of Monmouth County as a special proviso for Hudson Valley Township (now parts of Passaic and Union counties), including what are now Woodbury and Hackensack townships. As this happened while Monmouth County still had prevailed as the only cultural center within Hudson Valley Township, the residents there voted to continue to be governed by their own elected officials even though they were not included within the new municipality boundaries. In 1847, when all but two municipalities within Hudson Valley Township were added to Woodbury Borough, it remained an unincorporated village with no elections or official government activities other than meeting to discuss matters concerning its own affairs with representatives from those neighboring municipalities. As part of Bergen County's consolidation with New Jersey on January 1, 1979, woodbury lost its separate government status but continued to maintain its own police force and zoning regulations as well as electing its own Mayor and Council members from among its citizens rather than from any individual municipality within Bergen County . On December 3rd 1978 referendum voters approved annexation by Bergen County without any vote being taken on whether or not woodburys municipal borders should change

Woodbury was once a thriving town located in what is now Morris County, New Jersey. The community was founded in 1795 by Loyalists who fled the British during the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location on the Susquehanna River. By 1813, Woodbury had a population of over 1,000 people. It continued to grow throughout the 19th century, thanks in part to its lucrative lumber industry. However, when production declined in the early 20th century, Woodbury struggled to maintain its position as a major center of commerce and culture. In recent decades, however, it has regained some of its former prominence as a cultural and educational hub. The origins of Woodbury are complex. Originally called Northumberland Township (which later became Morris County), it was established by Lenape Indians in 1795 after they were forced out of their traditional territory south of Philadelphia by colonists under General George Washington’s command following the war against Great Britain. The original settlers were Quakers who exodus from Pennsylvania because they opposed British rule and wanted to stay within the United States rather than fight for England again. Of particular note are two brothers named James and John Nicholson who settled in what is now Woodbury in 1796-97; both men were members of Friends Meeting House #1 which met at nearby West Milford until 1827 when it relocated to Morristown due to growing religious diversity among Dutch immigrants living near Princeton NJ at that time (this meetng house still meets there today). As word spread about this new township – which only had 10 residents – other Old World friends came flowing into America’s most westward-striking settlement: these were Germans from Bavaria who had migrated through Philadelphia years earlier and seen an opportunity while land prices remained relatively high there; Scots also drifted northward during this period as provided opportunities opened up along both coasts for German migration westward [19]. These newcomers brought with them their own traditions, symbols and values which infused much of what would become known about “the Germantown Settlement”: William Penn himself expressly created “Germantown Township” using land granted him by Lord Dunmore on December 8eenth 1682[20]; so too did Dickinson College founder Samuel Adams set aside 7 acres east of Third Street (later renamed College Avenue) for students exclusively male(21); local farmers also leased space near present day shopping centers/mall complexes like Parsippany Mall & Shoppers Drug Mart adjacentanwiler Road back then… all these happenings helped contribute materially towards formulating identity & character traits underlying contemporary Rust Belt towns like Morris Plains etcetera where actually nearly everything situated east or northwest thereof originated prior thereto regardless whether initially realized or not thereby affording unique insights into essential preoccupations gov't planners took cognizance mightily upon first encountering any given locale newly discovered circa 1850 thru1975 irrespective whether initially realized or not thereby establishing essentially immutable physical characteristicsbesides elements inherent therein qi almost invariably produced more pronounced results than if efforts expended elsewhere failed even if such discoveries ultimately proved unwanted subsequently resulting primarily from factors external thereto rather than intrinsic nature & composition thereof! This aforementioned article provides background information on one significant aspect pertaining specifically to Woodbury: its long history as an important cultural center within Greater Morris County! Over time, Woodbury has developed into one of New Jersey’s most vibrant communities with several renowned institutions located within its boundaries including Dickinson College (#1 Coeducational college in Northeast US), Morristown University (@3rd campus), Stroudsburg University (& adjacentMedical School), risquesburgh State Park & Botanical Garden etcetera attracting hordes OF visitors annually! Notwithstanding difficult economic times experienced throughout much portions oj NJ during recent past decade ensuing various reductions oj state funding allocations resultant variously impacting statewide economic vitality our nationally renowned community nevertheless continues unabatedLY experiencing unprecedented levels oj pride & satisfaction collectively shared amongst individuals comprisingia majority oj whom reside herein Robbed unjustly numerous times btw!)
In 1755, the area that is now Woodbury was part of what is now Burlington County. The first white person to live in the town was John White, who settled in 1765. In 1814, Woodbury became a village. On April 14, 1825, the township of Woodbury was organized from portions of Burlington Township and Monmouth Township.
