The community began as a military outpost used by General George Washington during his march from Tappan Zee Bridge over Delaware River into Pennsylvania in 1775. It served as a base for trading with Native Americans before becoming known for its produce production which helped support local farms until after World War II when heavy industry moved into nearby towns such as Paterson or Lakewood NJ . Afterward, much of what remains of this old agricultural economy has become mixed use with commercial development including housing developments near Interstate 80 while other parts have been preserved for their architecture and landscape features only
The area now known as Woodbury was first settled by the English in 1624. The town was founded on a small rise in the Township of Warren, within the current boundaries of Jersey City. The land that would eventually become Woodbury was purchased from the natives by Major John Tryon and his brother-in-law, Colonel George Washington during their 1776 campaign for independence from Great Britain. On October 8, 1786, the town became part of New York after its territory was split off from New Jersey. In 1815, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of United States and changed Woodbury's name to Chicago to indicate his new home city. In 1898, it became a borough in Jersey City and has remained so since then.
