Woodbury, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 5,955 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the south side of the Passaic River. It was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Woodbury and others from nearby Paterson Township. The first settler in what is now Woodbury was Nicholas Woodbury and his family who arrived from Paterson Township in 1795. The original village of Woodbury burned down in 1814 but was rebuilt and named after Nicholas Woodbury as part of the townsite development that followed. In 1892, local developer George Hutton built what is now the glass factory complex on West Bridge Street which has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in town. In 1922, Stoneleigh Manor - a country estate belonging to Judge James Auchincloss - became home to a group of wealthy New Yorkers who sought to escape Prohibition-era America. Among these visitors were Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson and millionaire investor Eddie Ardiles (the man behind Atlantic City's Booker T & The MGs). Ardiles spent time living at Stoneleigh Manor before he moved into his own large villa adjacent to it later in 1922. As World War II progressed, many factories closed down because of rationing; however, Glass Factory #1 remained open until 1942 due to its location close to military bases all over Northern Europe as well as its use for making munitions necessary for World War II. After the war, production continued at Glass Factory #1 until 1962 when it switched to new technology using computer-generated images instead of hand-drawn illustrations like those used before; this made Glass Factory #1 one of the last American companies still producing handmade objects today. In 1957, construction began on a shopping mall which would eventually be called "The Mall". This shopping mall would feature an indoor/outdoor trackball game zone and several stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy's Inc., KMart Corporation (now Kohl's), Dick's Sporting Goods Incorporated and Ann Taylor Stores among others along with restaurants such as Wirtz Furniture Company and Chili’s Pizza Hut among others etc.. The first post office in the township was established in 1825. The population of Woodbury reached 1,500 by 1850; however, it declined to 907 by 1900. In 1928, the Township Council passed a resolution requesting that New Jersey join with Pennsylvania as one state; this resolution was later approved by the state legislature and became effective on January 1, 1929. On May 8, 1951, Township Council passed a resolution designating May 10th as "John Fenton Day" in memory of John Fenton who served as mayor from 1925-1930 and 1931-1935 and as chairman of Township Council from 1944-1945
The town of Woodbury was first settled in 1795 by a small group of immigrants from Ireland. The town was named for General John Woodbury, who had fought in the American Revolution. The first school in the town was built in 1802. In 1824, the first church was built in the town. The town grew rapidly after it became an incorporated municipality in 1912. In 1916, Woodbury annexed the towns of Hackensack and East Brunswick to form a new city.
