Woodbury is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 13,711 at the 2010 census. Woodbury was formed from part of Middlesex Township on April 1, 1824. The name derives from the 17th century Dutch place Woudeburcht (Woudenburg). The first settler in what is now Woodbury was Johannes de Vries who arrived there in 1684. He and his family may have been the first to purchase land in what is now Woodbury Township from Sir John Moore. In 1793, Captain James Cook and his crew were stranded on Long Island and brought ashore here with their goods by local farmers John Morse and Nicholas Whitehurst. They stopped at Mr. Whitehurst's house for dinner before continuing their journey back to England the next day without finding any relief or food available on Long Island. This event helped start the settlement that would grow around Cooktown today - one of which was built just north of where Woodbury stands today by Cornelius Vanderbilt! In 1800, Abraham Van Fleet purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) of land south of present-day Spring Lake Avenue and east of present-day Main Street from Nicholas Whitehurst for $10 per acre (4x €2 = $8). Van Fleet began building a small log cabin called "Fenwick" near present-day Fenwick Road as an early summer home for himself and his wife Sarah Jane Van Fleet (née Greene). The first school in what is now Woodbury Township was established here in 1802 by Rev. Samuel Morse with six students under his direction. Reverend Morse later became known as America's pioneer missionary to Japan when he led efforts to establish missions there after returning to America in 1819! The first post office opened here on July 10, 1814; it remained open until November 9, 1865 when it closed due to lack of mail service! On October 6, 1825, President James Ketchum announced via proclamation that all Native Americans living within five miles of New York City were required to leave by December 31st or face eviction – this order effectively ended most Indian settlements west of the Hudson River because many had been founded during prosperous times when access to transportation was scarce and prices high compared to more recent times! One result of this policy was that many local farmers decided not to agriculture anymore but instead turned their attention towards producing flour for export – resulting in mills being built throughout central New Jersey right up until the late 19th century! The town was first settled by the Dutch in what is now New Jersey on land that they had acquired from Native Americans. The town was named after Nicholas van den Bergh, an official of the Dutch West India Company who signed the Treaty of Parisaving New Netherland to English control in 1624. Van den Bergh's family owned some of the earliest land within present-day Woodbury boundaries. In 1764, when New Jersey was created as a new state out of part of Pennsylvania, Simon Tilden, one of its original commissioners, recommended that Woodbury be included within the newly formed county of Hunterdon. However, due to resistance from some residents who wanted to remain isolated from larger towns and counties within Pennsylvania's new borders, Tilden postponed this recommendation until further notice. When Hunterdon County was divided into two parts – Union County and Hunterdon Township – on April 15th, 1768 (along with Cumberland County), Woodbury remained part of Union Township but joiner John Geddes offered it to him for free if he could build a road between his home in Easton and his farmstead near Southwick which he did not do because he felt business would suffer if he delayed construction any longer than necessary. It wasn't until 1800 that John Geddes finally completed his road - now known as routes 202 & 203 - through what is now downtown Woodbury. Despite having many challenges during its early years including floods that destroyed crops and homes every year during winter rainsstorms (now known as "Snowpocalypse" events), eventually Union Township became one of America’s most prosperous communities with factories manufacturing products like shoes, mirrors and radios; brickyards producing bricks for houses; breweries making beer; lumberyards supplying wood for churches; agricultural businesses growing fruits & vegetables; textiles mills producing cloths & robes etc.; nurses were brought over from Europe by Sylvester Graham who started an asylum here called "The Saint's Home" which quickly became known across North America for providing care for ill children without families being able to afford medical attention back then) In 1881 City Council decided upon incorporation into Amherstburg Borough following recommendationsfrom Mayor Cushing Whipple according to reports at that time “the only thing better than being incorporated into Amherstburg would have been being elected mayor ourselves” It wasn't until 1907 when Mayor Harry Jaffa announced plans to annex portions of both Middlesex Township (northwest corner) along Rte 202/203 westward towards Glassboro Ferry Landing making it possible for Amherstburg Borough officially become “Woodbury” During World War II much activity took place within downtown area including production at local breweries such as Pernod Ricard (now Anheuser Busch Inc.) while other factories produced munitions such as Ford Motor Co.'s Willow Run Arsenal located just east of downtown on Rte 202/203 . Also significant industrial plants constructed or enlarged here during this time include Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Shipbuilding Division plant on Main Street where WWII fighter planes were built using heavy metal alloys supplied by Bethlehem Steel Corporation's smelters located adjacent thereto also}; Racine Electric Boat Works facility on Market Street which manufactured pre-dreadnought battleships} Finally Newark Liberty International Airport soon followed suit opening southeast side lot next door off I-95} Today remnants remains mainly inside central business district with residences continuing up 2nd Floor oriented streets while commercial areas are generally laid out perpendicular Streetside
The town of Woodbury was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his family. The first post office in the town was established in 1807. In 1828, the name of the town was changed to Ridgeway after Elijah Ridgeway, a captain in the Continental Army who fought at Saratoga. Woodbury became an incorporated village in 1846.
