The name of the town originates from a grant by George Washington to John Nicholson in 1779. The grant named after General Nicholas Wood (1714-1790), an American Revolutionary War officer and commander of British forces in North America who was also known for his hospitable spirit and for his land transactions which were often considered as preliminary to peace negotiations between Great Britain and its colonies following the Seven Years' War. Nicholson's grant also included 640 acres (247 hectares) of present-day Woodbury Township adjacent to what is now Atlantic County. designation as a borough arrived with the incorporation of the township on April 14, 1837. On December 12, 1860, it merged into Philadelphia Borough but continued to be administered separately until it became part of Philadelphia on January 1, 1898. In 1892 Drury Lane real estate developer James Auchincloss donated land that would become downtown Woodbury; this donation remains one of town's most important assets today. The first store opened at 222 W Market Street in 1893 and soon there were several other businesses including a brewery (1896), grocery store (1901), movie theater (1907), piano store (1911), dry goods store (.1920s), lumberyard (.1930s) and many more over time until all but one closed during World War II while remaining open during peacetime as a popular shopping destination for locals and visitors alike - an early example of emergency wartime shopping being done online or locally rather than through large commercial stores then typical arrivals during wartime period when many such businesses closed due to lack of customers or enemy action). Woodbury is a town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Woodbury is located on the Delaware River and ZIP codes 18104-18117. The first European settler in what is now Woodbury was Nicholas Hennings who arrived in 1753 from New York City. He built a log cabin on the current site of the town in 1756. James Dickinson became an early landowner in what would eventually become Woodbury Township. His farmstead still stands today on East Green Street near present day Central Avenue. In 1827 Elijah Hicks purchased land east of present day West Meadow Road from Abram de la Salle for $5 per acre Eliot Pemberton bought some adjoining land between West Meadow Road and Elmhurst Drive in 1830 for $10 per acre Hickson's heirs sold additional tracts totaling nearly , making it one of Bucks County's largest landowners . ThePemberton tract passed into private hands until 1912 when it was donated to Temple University . After years of debate over whether or not to makewoodbury an incorporated community, voters approved incorporation on November 4th of that year by a vote of 2-1 .
