Woodbury is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1701 by British colonists as Westwood Township. In 1837, it became part of the new township of North Brunswick and was renamed Woodbury after Major General John A. Woodbury who had fought in the American Revolution. In 1875, it became a borough and was named for George Washington Woodbury who served as Mayor from 1889 to 1893 and as an United States Senator from New Jersey from 1895-97. In 1951, the Borough of North Brunswick merged with Woodbury to form what is now known as South Mercer Township which retained its name until 1984 when it changed to Plainfield Township in honor of then-Governor Thomas Kean Jr.. On October 1st, 2017, South Mercer Townshipolls were consolidated into plainfield township effective January 1st 2018). The first settler in what would become Woodbury was Captain John Smith who arrived on July 14th, 1701 along with his wife Elizabeth and their five children under the leadership of Admiral Samuel Graves. The first home built in Westwood Township was erected on Christmas day 1701 by Captains James Smith (born 1692) and John Cranch (1696). By 1800 there were 10 homes in Westwood Township with over 100 residents engaged in farming and ranching activities including raising horses and cows; tanning hides; making bricks; dyeing fabrics; brewing beer; baking goods etc., all while relying heavily on outside assistance such as ships that brought supplies often every week or more depending on how far away they were located at various points along Long Island Sound. One early leader of Westwood Township who later served as mayor during this time period was Nicholas Coles (1698-1756), one of the original grantees to what would become Middlesex County through King George II’s grant program meant to encourage English settlement throughout America following King William III’s victory over France at Yorktown two years earlier. Coles had come from Methuen Parish near Boston where he had been born about 1685/86 only son of Mr./Mrs./Gentleman Nicholas Coles Sr.(1664-1725), shopkeeper extraordinaire & owner/operator (and parsonage Keeper) within one hundred vigorous years (& many more generations removed!)of lively business activityAbingdon Parish +1 ½ miles south - “the most thriving parish ever birthed out within these limits!”& one & three quarter hours journey north [from Princeton]by horseback or boat . The town of Woodbury, New Jersey was founded on the banks of the Hackensack River in 1764 by Elisha Gray. The town became a borough in 1892 and was renamed Woodbury Township in 1903. The population of Woodbury reached 9,857 as of 2010. The first settler in what is now Woodbury was Mr. John Nichols who arrived in 1764 from England with his family. He built a log cabin on the riverbank and named it “Johnstown” after his home country. Mr. Nichols' wife, Mary Livingstone (née Young), took up farming in adjacent present-day Princeton Township and raised their six children there until they were sixteen years old when they moved to what is now Woodbury to take up landowning careers. In 1814, two brothers from England, George Washington Cook and Nathaniel Cook, landed at Cherry Point on Long Island and started a mill on the Hackensack River which soon became successful enough to be bought by Nicholas de Venier for $5,000 cash. De Venier renamed it the Northampton Mills and began producing flour for local markets from native cornmeal imported from England. In 1825, he sold his mills to Abraham Van Nostrand who continued production until 1870 when he merged them with those of Amosinational Company into one giant enterprise that would become known as National Mill Corporation (NMC). At its peak NMC manufactured over 1 million barrels per day of flour products including bread doughs; noodles; breakfast items like oatmeal; jams and jellies; pasta dishes such as spaghetti carbonara; macaroni salad; udon noodle dishes; bread pudding etc., all across America! During World War II many companies within NMC contributed their skills and resources towards munitions production including Bethlehem Steel Works (now ArcelorMittal) where tens of thousands were employed creating skyscrapers like Steel Tower – one of only three ever completed – or making flathead screws used in aircraft construction such as B-17 Flying Fortress bombers or P-51 Mustang fighters! In 1951 NMC merged with United States Paperworkers Union Local 8888 to form American Paperworkers Union (APU) which remains an important advocate for working families today! In 1974 APU merged with National Labor Relations Board to create National Labor Relations Commission (!), America's first labor union bureaucracy responsible for recording strikes/lockouts throughout America! Today we continue this proud lineage via Organizing for Quality Trade unionism (OQT)!

In 1864, the borough of Eastmilford merged with Woodbury to form a new township. The growth and development of the town began to take hold during this time and by 1870, the population had reached 5,000 people. By 1880, due to increased immigration into the area from Europe, the population had reached 10,000 people and by 1920 it had reached 15,000 people. With continued growth and development in the town throughout its history, it has become one of New Jersey's most popular tourist destinations.
